Fees and Policies

What to Expect

  • The rate per session is reflective of prices in the Bay Area and the current economic landscape.

    Standard fee:

$190 per 50-minute session. This fee is comparable to other therapists of similar experience and expertise in the Bay Area.

    Solidarity fee:

For clients with access to wealth (e.g., you own your home, you have a net household income of over $100K, you do not have any debt, you have investments and retirement funds, you do not worry about attaining basic needs like food and housing), please consider paying $200-220 per session. Additional funds would directly support low-fee clients’ ability to either start and/or continue services. If you are interested in this fee structure, please let me know in the intake form or during our consultation appointment. You can refer to Alexis J. Cunningham’s “Green Bottle” sliding scale model when making your decision.

I am not able to offer sliding scale at this time.

  • I use a secure, HIPAA-compliant app called IvyPay, which was developed specifically for therapists. You do not need to download this app to complete payment. You will be prompted to put a card on file. This can be a debit card, credit card, Flexible Spending Account (FSA) card or Health Spending Account (HSA) card. After each session, you will be charged the agreed-upon fee.

  • I only provide services through Zoom, a secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform. Telehealth is offered because it is more accessible for people who have busy schedules, cannot physically get to an office, have communication needs that can be met through chat, and/or live outside of the local Oakland area. Telehealth also allows me to engage in this work more sustainably, given my various health needs.

  • I do not contract with insurance companies. I can provide an invoice or Superbill if you are submitting our sessions for out-of-network reimbursement. Please review this policy with your insurance first to find out what your coverage is.

  • I work mornings and afternoons Mondays-Thursdays. Morning sessions start at 10am PST. I do not schedule past 4pm PST.

  • We will meet once or twice a week, depending on your therapy needs. Some folks ask to meet every other week. As of March 2023, I am not taking on clients who would like this frequency.

I encourage weekly sessions in order to minimize the need to “catch up” on context for things that have occurred between sessions. This gives us more time to engage in deeper level healing work. Meeting weekly also means practicing grounding and meditative skills on a more regular basis, which strengthens these skills.

Together we choose a day and time that we can meet consistently, as this supports the process of building trust and rapport in our relationship. I understand that this might not always be possible when folks have inconsistent schedules. If that’s the case, we can talk about it early on—it does not need to be a barrier to therapy.

  • While it can be difficult to anticipate how long one might be in therapy, I typically work with clients for at minimum 6 months. This is because my practice is structured on deeper emotional work (in contrast with brief, solution-focused or skill-based therapies), which often requires more time to build trust in the relationship in order to process complex experiences.

  • I will not share information about you to others. Confidentiality is central to building trust in our relationship. The parameters of confidentiality vary under these conditions:

Therapists seek consultation when we need additional information about how to best proceed with care for our clients. A similar scenario is when doctors collaborate with each other to ensure the best treatment for a patient. No identifying information is shared in the process. If identifying info is shared, it’s only when the client has agreed in writing to this disclosure. For instance, it can be helpful for me to talk to your psychiatrist or primary care doctor if you are starting or changing medication, but this would only happen if you signed a release of information form.

There are also specific situations where I am required by law as a mandated reporter to step outside the parameters of confidentiality. If this happens, I will inform you first, if possible. These situations have to do with your safety and will be reviewed in our informed consent conversation so that you know exactly what the parameters are. This does not mean that we cannot talk about those things. It just means that I will need to call on others for extra support.

  • I require 24-hour notice of our appointment that you would like to cancel or reschedule via email, text, or voicemail. If you do not notify me within 24 hours and/or do not show up for session, you are responsible to pay the full fee. If you need to reschedule, I cannot guarantee that there will be openings that same week for a rescheduled session.

  • “Good Faith Estimate” Notice

Under the No Surprises Act (effective January 1, 2022) , you have the right to request and receive a “Good Faith Estimate” of how much your mental health care will reasonably cost. This is especially for clients who do not have insurance or who are not using insurance to cover the charges for therapy. You can ask for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule your first session. It is NOT a commitment to therapy.

For more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call (800) 985-3059.
